Search for R.A.F. Man.
A Dutch historical foundation is attempting to trace the family of a Gwent man who died during the second world war. Sgt Douglas Hancock a wireless operator for the R.A.F. was part of the crew on the Lancaster Mark 11 bomber nicknamed POPEYE . The plane was shot down over the Dutch town of Papendracht on the night of July 20th 1944 after taking off from Cambridgeshire. It was the last of 22 planes from 115 Sqn heading for Hamburg. Sgt Hancock lived in Monmouthshire and was the son of Mr and Mrs James Hancock from Tredegar. In September 2002 the Royal Netherlands Air Force started displaying parts of POPEYE in the local museum in Papendracht and on July 21st this year 2004 the Dutch based Lancaster Foundation is to unveil a monument at the location of the crash. A spokesman said " it would be nice if the family of Sgt Douglas Hancock are also present". If you can help in finding any of the family please phone the "Argus Newspaper" on 01633 777226 or 777219
