CWMBRAN HISTORICAL
SOCIETY
SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER
Welcome back to
our monthly meetings at the R.A.F.A.
Hope you had a
good summer (or what there was of it!)
THE 'BLUE' PLAQUES
One of our ‘ongoing’
projects over the past four years you may remember was the installation of
commemorative ‘Blue’ plaques in
various locations
around the town.
These were to
commemorate noteworthy persons who were natives of Cwmbran who had contributed
in no small way to the history and
prosperity of the town.
Most, if not all
of these plaques have now been installed, and although not blue china (too
expensive!) they are in a more durable and easy to renovate charcoal grey and
silver.
Some of the
people honoured are Reginald Blewitt M.P. (on the
gate of Llantarnam Abbey which was his former home),
Tom Richards of Upper Cwmbran, Olympic Silver medallist, this on the Queen Inn,
-as Tom lived too far up the mountain for anyone passing to see his plaque,-
and of course John Fielding (Williams)
at Ty Coch where he once lived..
This one was
mentioned on Radio Wales by Derek Brockway the BBC’s “Weatherman Walking” a few
weeks ago.
These plaques
were provided by the Cwmbran Regeneration Group who have worked with us for a
number of years to provide access to the historical aspects of the town.
One of the last official functions of outgoing Mayor
‘Nye’ James
is unveiling the plaque
commemorating
MP Reginald Blewitt
at Llantarnam Abbey
The Cwmbran
Regeneration Group consists of members of the Torfaen County Borough Council,
Cwmbran
Community Council
and Croesyceiliog and Llanyravon
Community Council.
OUR RECENT EXCURSIONS
Hopefully many of
you will by now have taken advantage of our incredibly economical trips to
places of historical interest.
We have been very
lucky with the weather ,but I have always said that Dawn has had a secret
helper with this. Either she was “well in” with “Him above” or she has a pact
with the Devil. Well now we know, as those who will have seen her picture
recently in the Argus will have noticed that she appeared to have horns coming
out of her head. “A trick of the light” you may say! Well I’m reserving
judgement! >>>>>>
For those who
missed the trips so far (as I did) the Veteran’s Day at Weymouth was a
resounding success, as was the Blist’s Hill and
Horses in Harness event-although some said the entrance fee was a bit high.
Cyfartha Castle was another sunny success, and the tea was an added bonus, as
were the lovely gardens.
The Worcester
Feast was another great success. In addition to the food and wine to be sampled
there was also an exhibition of beautiful costumes worn in TV series and Oscar
winning films. There were over 100 and were truly magnificent, and some of our members managed to
incorporate strolls along the river as
well as some serious shopping.
Dawn had
sacrificed a couple of goats or virgins on Friday night so the weather was
firing on all cylinders for us as usual.
A lovely day all
round! Great!
